As we get deeper into December, things seem to move in warp speed and the holiday lights start to blur together as we jump from one mall and holiday celebration to the next! I say lets slow things down, get in the real spirit of the holidays, and take a step back and enjoy some of the days gone by holiday decorations in our historic homes and museums, enjoy slow meandering shopping at quaint shops and a casual meal with friends. Ah, I am feeling a little calmer just thinking about it.

A North Central Ohio Autumn Adventure for Three Generations

Picture a beautiful, sunny, north central Ohio Saturday with a clear calendar (meaning—no soccer games, meetings, volunteer commitments etc) and full tank of gas. For our full day itinerary I brought along my 12 year old daughter and 70+ year old mother. What a blast we had! I am going to share our map and itinerary, some photos and add in some suggestions for adults that might not have younger ones in tow. There are still a few of these weekends left — great weather, brimming produce stands, outdoor entertainment and harvest season happenings— to savor. So give some of these suggestions a try. We focused primarily on the eastern part of Lorain County in Avon and North Ridgeville. You can definitely add more to the itinerary.

78 acres of wooded land in the heart of Avon. A Visitor Center is nestled between trees and thewinding French Creek and includes a café, the Orchid Room, a gift shop and ademonstration kitchen for cooking classes. The Orchid Room has floor to ceilingwindows that look onto the outside patio and gardens. You can have lunchor an early dinner. Open daily 11am - 6pm. The menu includes an array ofsalads, soups, sandwiches and other delicious dishes made from freshingredients. The highlight of this preserve is the 5,000 square footconservatory, the first in Lorain County. Highlights include the bonsai and orchid collections. There are also desert and carnivorous plants that capture the imagination. While we visited there were seasonal displays of mums and other traditional autumn displays.

Just down the road from the Miller Nature Preserve is the Fitch's Farm Market. This place was bustling when we arrived! Lots of fresh produce, pumpkins, peppers, broccoli, potatoes and much, much more. The fall season is just kicking off and they will be doing pumpkin wagon rides in October. I bought a big bag of peaches and have been packing them in the kids' lunches and I'm told the other kids are scarfing them down! Everyone loves them... me too!

Allen Memorial Art Museum Reopens

The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College has reopened after a twenty-month renovation. Admission to the Museum is free. According to Museum officials, the galleries are newly installed to “showcase the breadth and importance of the AMAM's permanent collection, which ranges from ancient art from the Near East and Egypt to works made by today’s contemporary artists.”

The Museum will hold a “First Thursday” event on Sept. 8 which will feature evening hours from 6–9pm. Handheld audio tours will be available to visitors.

A full calendar of public programs returns this month, including Tuesday Tea lectures (beginning on Sept. 13 at 2:30pm) and Sunday Object talks (beginning on Sept. 18 at 2pm).

Friday, July 1^st

There is no better way to celebrate American culture then by gathering the family for exciting evening of baseball! The Lake Erie Crushers take to their home field for a thrilling challenge against the Gateway Grizzlies. The game throws its first pitch at 7:00pm and will conclude the evening with a fireworks display overlooking the field. Saturday, July 2^nd

The Lorain County Speedway is getting ready to light up the track and the sky! Races begin at 7:00pm with the grandstands opening at 3:00pm. Sunday, July 3^rd

The city of Oberlin is welcoming the fourth with a display of light and color that is sure to brighten everyone’s evening. Fireworks will be displayed at the Oberlin Recreation Complex on Hamilton Street just past Splash Zone. This American favorite will start at dusk. In the case of bad weather, fireworks will be moved to Monday.

Add music to your weekend by visiting the Port Fest at the Black River Landing in Lorain. The Port Fest starts at 10am on Sunday with a canoe/kayak race. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the car show, crafts, great food, and games for kids. Music for the evening includes The Drifters (Motown) at 8pm and The Rat Pack (Frank, Dean, and Sammy) at 9pm. Finally, the Black River Landing provides a unique firework show starting at 10:00pm.

Looking for great family fun? The North Ridgeville Parks and Recreation Department is having a Party in the Park! The party is set to occur at South Central Park starting at 5:30pm, and will have food concessions with a full menu. Free family activities including live music, face painting, magic shows and more will occur from 6 to 8:30pm. The party will conclude with a fireworks display at dusk, provided by the North Ridgeville Fire Department.

ArtsFest is a free outdoor festival celebrating the arts in Northeast Ohio. The event will take place at Miller Road Park in Avon Lake, starting at 2:00pm. Artists and vendors from the area will be on hand to showcase and sell their art, and there is live music and free entertainment throughout the day. The day ends with a spectacular fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day, so be sure to stay through the end of the evening!

Wellington adds more excitement to Independence weekend with two days of family festivities. Starting on Sunday evening head over to the town hall lawn for the Patriots community Band Concert and Ice Cream Social. Stick around for fireworks at the fairgrounds beginning at dusk.

Monday, July 4^th

Wellington continues their celebrations on July Fourth with food, games, and family activities starting at 11:30am. The celebration in the park will feature the area’s largest Independence Day Parade starting at 3pm. Grab a spot along the curb of South Main Street and experience this patriotic event.

Cedar Point will celebrate the Fourth with two nights of fireworks and other events.

Outdoor grilling AND walleye season are both in full swing! Walleye can be found now in the near shore waters of Lake Erie between Vermilion and Avon Point. Got a cooler full of fresh walleye? Lucky you! How about grilling up something a bit different? This recipe is not too difficult and a family favorite (even among kids who aren't known to cheer when told fish is on the menu!). If you want the freshest walleye, catch your own. You can hire a great, local charter captain who will make sure your cooler is full.

Grilled Walleye Tacos

Feeds 3–4

1lb fresh Lake Erie walleye fillet
corn or flour tortillas, or pita

Marinade
¼ cup chopped cilantro leaves
2 cloves of garlic minced
1 cup chopped white onion
dash of chili pepper
3 tbsp. lime juice
3 tbsp. orange juice
½ mango, diced
1 tsp. dried oregano
¼ cup olive oil

Combine marinade ingredients and mix

1. Combine mixed marinade ingredients into resealable plastic bag or baking dish, add walleye fillets, mix, chill and marinate for 1 hour. (while walleye is marinating, prepare Mango Salsa as directed below)

2. Place walleye on grill (in foil) with some of the marinade and cook on medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes per side. Or, I prefer to use an indoor/George Foreman Grill and cook 7 minutes.

3. Warm corn or flour tortillas or pita.

4. Spoon walleye into tortilla and serve topped with mango salsa.

Mango salsa ingredients

Mango salsa

1 mango, pitted and diced
4 stem tomatoes, diced
1 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced
1 serrano pepper, seeded and minced
2 tablespoons lime juice
3 cloves of garlic, minced
¼ cup red onion, chopped
½ cup cucumber, diced
½ cup cilantro leaves, chopped
1 tsp sea salt
3 tablespoons of olive oil

Combine ingredients into medium bowl and stir gently. Refrigerate for at least a half hour to combine flavors.

Mango salsa, mixed

Wine pairings: Serve with a local, dry white wine. Suggestions: 2008 Chardonnay from Klingshirn Winery or Viognier from Paper Moon Vineyards. Or, enjoy with a cold beer or lemonade.

Oberlin: “Stop 99” on the Underground Railroad

Oberlin has been at the vanguard of civil liberties in America, with Oberlin College as the first institution to open its doors to African-Americans (1835) and women (1837). A major center of the anti-slavery movement in the U.S., the town attracted many runaway slaves whose descendants still live in Oberlin today.

The first stop in your tour around town should be the Oberlin Heritage Center [73 South Professor Street]. It is the former home of Civil War General Giles W. Shurtleff, who led the first African-American regiment from Ohio to serve in the Civil War. It later became the home of abolitionist James Monroe. Here, you’ll find the majestic portrait of Dr. James Harris Fairchild, who harbored John Price after his re-capture and who became a president of Oberlin College. With regular tours, “History Walks” and impassioned docents, the Museum gives you plenty of history lessons on Oberlin’s activist citizens, both white and African-American.

John Mercer Langston

Oberlin is a great walking town, so you’ll find most historic homes within reach. The Langston House [207 East College Street] was the home of John Mercer Langston, Ohio’s first African-American attorney and an ardent abolitionist. His brother Charles Langston was an Oberlin-Wellington Rescuer. Then, stop by the Bardwell House [181 East Lorain], home of the Reverend John Bardwell and his wife Cornelia, both abolitionists who hid runaway slaves under the eaves of their house. The Langston and Bardwell Houses are privately owned and not open to the public. The First Church in Oberlin [106 North Main Street] was the historic meeting place of the Oberlin Anti-Slavery Society, and the site of the haunting memorial and funeral service for a four-year-old slave child, Lee Howard Dobbins.

If ever a place “boasted” of more illustrious citizens laid to rest, it would be Westwood Cemetery [455 Morgan Street]. Amidst statuesque pines and oak trees are the graves of Simeon Bushnell, one of the Rescuers; Lewis Clarke, a former slave and abolitionist whom, it was believed, Harriet Beecher Stowe based her character George Harris on in Uncle Tom’s Cabin; the unmarked grave (see below) of four-year-old Lee Howard Dobbins; James Harris Fairchild; Charles Martin Hall, inventor of an inexpensive method of producing aluminum; James Fitch, who secretly drove John Price to Fairchild’s home; the abolitionist James Monroe; General Giles Waldo Shurtleff; and John Watson, a former slave, Oberlin businessman and a chief organizer of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue.

Before Rosa Parks There Was Henry Lee

You’ll discover one of the most astounding stories of Oberlin in Henry Lee, a former slave buried in Westwood. Lee predated Rosa Park’s historic refusal to sit in the “colored section” of a bus in Montgomery, AL, on December 1, 1955 by almost a century. In 1865 in Wheeling, West Virginia, Lee refused to be uprooted from a first-class train seat and placed in a section reserved for black patrons. Four years later, Lee showed the same courage on another train; he was beaten and jailed. He sued the railroad and won the lawsuit – plus damages -- two years later. Lee was also adamant with Oberlin schools about removing the name “Sambo” from a textbook, claiming it was racist. His efforts paid off; the author pledged to remove the name in his next edition.

For educators and scholars who are interested in serious research, a must-visit would be the Oberlin College Archives, Special Collections, at the Mudd (Library) Center [148 West College Street, Fourth Floor.]. The Collection holds 2,500 to 3,000 titles related to the anti-slavery movement in the U.S. and especially to the activism of Oberlin College students and professors. They include such precious documents as the original Rescuer newspaper, published on the day of the Rescue, as well as hundreds of letters and manuscripts written by abolitionists. Here, too, you will find Southern plantation inventories and bills of sale for slaves. You will see such artifacts as the chain and lock for a 19-year-old slave named Margaret Toogood, who was unshackled by Union General Lew Wallace. Wallace donated the shackles to Oberlin College.

One of the most poignant symbols of the Underground Railroad held currently in the Collection is the tombstone of the slave child Lee Howard Dobbins. Too ill to travel to Canada with his family, he was kept behind in Oberlin, where he died on March 26, 1853, just days after his arrival. His tombstone was removed from Westwood Cemetery for safekeeping, and it will be transferred to the new Oberlin Underground Railroad Center [South Main Street, adjacent to the former Missler supermarket] once the building has been restored. “Serving as a tourist gateway and transportation hub, the Center will celebrate Oberlin’s rich history in the anti-slavery movement and honors African-American heritage to promote a better understanding of the past and provide a pathway to our future,” says Oberlin Assistant City Manager Darlene Colaso, explaining the Center’s mission. With a multi-phased restoration plan, the Oberlin-focused Center is expected to open in several years, and will feature ongoing historic and educational exhibitions in a serene setting of lawns and gardens. Colaso adds, “The project has far-reaching economic development tentacles that will not only touch those in Oberlin, but will benefit the surrounding regional area, as well. Oberlin has many compelling stories. I believe that the Center, coupled with Oberlin’s rich history, will quickly become a national draw.”

To add to the wealth of history, Oberlin is blessed with wonderful restaurants and shops. Rest your weary feet and tantalize your palate at The Feve [30 South Main Street] or Quick and Delicious [311 South Main Street]. Spend a couple days exploring the areas history, using the Oberlin Inn or other local lodging for your base while you explore.

Be sure to check out Oberlin’s renowned festivals. Juneteenth Celebration [June 17-19, 2011] is the nation’s oldest event commemorating the freeing of slaves in the U.S. (1865). You’ll be moved by lectures and a Westwood Cemetery walking tour at Oberlin’s Juneteenth festivities, plus you’ll enjoy a delectable community picnic with terrific music. Or you can bring out your inner artist at Oberlin’s annual Chalk Walk [June 25], creating chalk art on the “canvas” of Oberlin sidewalks. Be sure to bring the little ones to the Family Fun Fair [August 6], with antique autos on display, kids’ games and oldies music.

While Lorain County has played a proud, heroic and oftentimes tragic role in the history of the United States, it also celebrates the enduring spirit of life. You’ll find out, to be sure.

Wellington/Oberlin History and the Underground Railroad

We’re all dreading the rising price of gas this summer. If you can’t afford to travel far, give your family a meaningful experience this summer and show them the real origins of the Civil War – right here in Lorain County. This year, 2011, marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War in America, and it all began in the towns of Wellington and Oberlin on September 13, 1858.

Back then, Northeast Ohio was a hotbed of the abolition movement in the U.S. An “Underground Railroad” had been operating for years, bringing slaves to freedom in Ohio and then to Canada, which had, under the British Slavery Abolition Act, banned slavery in 1833.

But it was a secret railroad with no engine or whistle, no iron tracks or depots, no tickets or schedules. In the darkness of night, slaves made their way up from the South to Ohio via “conductors,” or guides. They found shelter in hiding places and safe houses called “stations.” Wellington, OH, was “Stop 98” on the Underground Railroad; Oberlin, farther north, was “Stop 99” on the way to Lake Erie and the boat trip to freedom in southern Ontario, Canada.

The Wellington-Oberlin Rescue

On September 13, 1858, a scared and fragile 17-year-old former slave, John Price, was tricked into being captured in Oberlin by Federal marshals, who were acting under the laws of the Fugitive Slave Act (1850). The marshals planned to return Price to Kentucky and his “owners,” despite the fact that Price had lived as a free man in Oberlin for two years. There had been three attempted captures of former slaves in the area in 1858 alone. The marshals drove Price in stealth to the American House (Wadsworth Hotel) in Wellington.

Passions ran so high against slavery in Northeast Ohio that few residents of Oberlin or Wellington dallied or debated when they learned that Price had been captured. They took action. They sped off in buggies for the eight-mile journey to Wellington, along what is now Hallauer Road.

More than 200 Wellington and Oberlin residents -- former slaves and free men, lawyers, college students and professors, religious leaders and ordinary citizens – gathered at the American House in Wellington to pressure the Federal marshals into releasing Price. The marshals refused. Finally, 37 men -- 11 from Wellington, 24 from Oberlin and two from Pittsfield and Penfield – orchestrated the dramatic re-capture of young Price and returned him to Oberlin. It was a bloodless event. Price was hidden in the home of Dr. James Fairchild, who later became President of Oberlin College. The 37 men who led the rescue were arrested and sent to Cleveland for trial.

Charles Henry Langston, one of the African-American rescuers who was tried, plead to the Cleveland court:
“We have a common humanity. You would do so; your manhood would require it; and no matter what the laws might be, you would honor yourself for doing it; your friends would honor you for doing it; your children to all generations would honor you for doing it; and every good and honest man would say, you had done right!”

Anti-slavery sentiments prevailed, and Langston was given a light sentence. The “Oberlin-Wellington Rescue” was reported as a triumph throughout the Union media and further roused anti-slavery sentiment, which spurred the start of the Civil War in America. While John Price finally made his way to Canada as a free man, no further evidence of his life there has been discovered.

You can literally drive by “Stop 98” on the Underground Railroad: the Alonzo Webster House [located at 46785 Route 18 West], which hid many runaway slaves. The house is now a private residence and is not open to the public. Webster was a cousin of statesman Daniel Webster.

Be sure to chat with Tim Simonson, owner of the Simonson Clock Shop [226 South Main Street], who lives and breathes Wellington history. Curator of The Spirit of ’76 Museum in town, Tim recalls how, as a boy, his parents proudly showed him houses that harbored runaway slaves. His great-, great-grandparents were witnesses to the Rescue.

The site of the Wellington-Oberlin Rescue, American House, was torn down, and its place is the Herrick Memorial Library [101 Willard Memorial Square]. A must-stop is The Spirit of ’76 Museum [201 North Main Street], which houses hundreds of artifacts on the Wellington-Oberlin Rescue, the Civil War and more. Here you’ll find original photographs of the Rescuers, court proceedings related to them and a bust of the revolutionary abolitionist John Brown, who led the Harpers Ferry raid. Scott Markel, vice president of the Southern Lorain County Historical Society, is proud to announce the recent, exciting discovery of abolitionist meeting documents, a rarity in the secret anti-slavery movement. The Museum will begin transcribing these papers this summer for display at a future date.
Also housed in the Museum are a complete collection of Civil War guns and bullets, plus Grand Army of the Republic uniforms. A special bonus, you’ll find prints by artist Archibald Willard, who is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Wellington. Willard crafted the famous painting “The Spirit of ’76” after he saw a parade pass through Wellington’s town square.

Because of its extensive collection, you’ll want to linger longer in the Museum, but why not take a break? Head for lunch at the Bread-N-Brew [100 South Main Street], a bakery and gourmet coffee shop with delectable sandwiches and bread. Across the street you can’t miss Wellington Town Hall, with its stunning Byzantine cupolas. Later, take a spin around town to view Wellington’s breathtaking, Victorian-era mansions.
Wellington is also rich in fairs and festivals, including the Scottish Games, the Lorain County Fair, the Wellington Cheese Festival and Harvest of the Arts.

Whether you are a life-long North Central Ohio resident or a welcomed out-of-state guest, we’ve prepared some day-trip and long weekend itineraries!

History buffs will find an abundance of interesting, significant Lorain County history. Start your tour in Elyria at the Lorain County Historical Society and Hickories Museum. The Hickories Museum is an 1895 mansion built by Arthur Garford, the Elyria industrialist who invented the padded bicycle seat. Exhibits highlight the home's original architecture and details the everyday life of an upper-class, early 20th century family.

A lunchtime visit to Smitty’s Place in Elyria is always a welcome treat! A family tradition since 1934, Smitty's is renowned for their “Smitty Burger.” This local favorite has even drawn national attention with a visit from President Barack Obama!

From your stop at the Hickories Museum, venture to downtown Lorain's Black River Landing and Historical Society. Lorain‘s legacy is based on shipbuilding, steel and as a departure point for runaway slaves searching for freedom in Canada. The Lorain Underground Railroad Station 100 Monument stands along the banks of the Black River.

While in downtown Lorain take some time to explore the Lorain Arts Council gallery on Broadway Avenue. Many talented local artists have their works on display such as, watercolor landscapes, photography and custom painted wooden eggs. Exhibits change frequently and highlight all areas of artistic media.

A visit to Lorain would be remiss without a stop for brunch or lunch at Lakeview Park’s Rose Café. This beautiful waterfront facility offers spectacular views of Lake Erie and the historic Lorain Lighthouse. Lakeview Park also maintains a half-mile beach, garden pathways and a lawn-bowling green area. The historic rose garden, officially dedicated in 1932, now displays more than 2500 roses in 48 beds with connecting walkways and paths. Spend some time walking through this Lorain County Metroparks gem and you will see how this has become a favorite place!

The next stop on our historical tour takes us a bit south of Lorain toward Amherst. Along the way, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Lorain County is a reflective stopping point. This monument honors the 98 Lorain County men who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

Shortly beyond the Veterans Memorial is the Amherst Historical Society and Sandstone Village. Take a step back in time and learn how Amherst became known as the “Sandstone Capital of the World.” Explore the Chapel, Blacksmith Shop, Victorian House, One-room Schoolhouse and Stone Carver Workshop. The Octagonal Barn is an interesting and unique 19th century structure. The on-site Art Gallery highlights works by Neal Jenne, artist in residence, and other local artists.

While in Amherst, restaurant choices include Hot Dog Heaven or Olde Town Pizza. Moosehead Grill offers an extensive barbecue and dinner menu, along with daily specials. Don’t forget Kiedrowski's Bakery, no trip would be complete without a sampling of their world famous Snoogle or Paczki!

After a day of historical exploration, why not relax and unwind at a nearby winery? Paper Moon Vineyards, Vermilion Valley Vineyards and Matus Winery are all within a short distance of downtown Amherst. Each offers a variety of local and regional wine samples, impressive tasting rooms, evening entertainment and beautiful scenery!

As January comes to an end, many of us are starting to see the signs of “cabin fever” settling in. Shorter days don’t necessarily mean days without plenty to do! February kicks off with a wide variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. There is so much to see and do throughout North Central Ohio, you’ll wish that winter will never end! Well…at least see the bright side of winter!

News of snowstorms and winter weather wreaking havoc are all around! Take a moment to enjoy winter at any of the Lorain Metro Parks, check out their list of events at www.metroparks.cc. Explore the stunning beauty of the larger than life, natural frozen sculptures at Mill Hollow, Vermilion River Reservations’ Big Icicle Hike, February 3rd from 3-4pm.

No need to travel to another country to enjoy witnessing the spectacular ice creations often designed for the Winter Olympics! Just take a short trip to downtown Vermilion to enjoy their annual Ice-A-Fair to Remember, Saturday, February 5 from 10:30am-4:00pm. Vermilion's historic downtown Harbour Town will be transformed into an enchanted gallery of illuminated ice art. Dozens of elegant ice creations will sparkle at Victory Park and line Liberty and Main Streets in Vermilion. This wonderful event, sponsored by Main Street Vermilion, is free and open to the public.

Ice Carving Demonstration

Hoping to enjoy browsing through a quaint town and satisfy your sweet tooth? Then plan to attend Wellington’s Chocolate Walk and Wine Tasting, Saturday February 5th. Only 150 tickets will be sold for the Downtown Chocolate Walk, sponsored by Bread and Brew. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the unique stores and restaurants in the Wellington community, while sampling a delicious chocolate treat at each. The Winter Wine Tasting, hosted at Fort’s Old Town Tavern will coincide with the chocolate walk, offering the chance to sample a dozen wines from around the world. Tickets for each event are $10 and can be purchased at Main Street Wellington’s office at 118 Herrick Avenue West, Wellington’s Village Market at 816 North Main Street, and Wellington Implement at 625 South Main Street.

For those of you looking for a chance to get some exercise and embrace the outdoors, check out the 31st Annual Buckeye Trail Winter Hike at Findley State Park. The events start at 10:00am Saturday, February 5th. Enjoy the best hiking day and the best bean soup, with the hardiest hikers in Ohio. Hikes include a 10k, 5k and interpretive lead hikes. Meet at the nature center in the campground. Bean soup is provided by the non-profit Friends of Findley State Park and donations are appreciated. Don’t Let The Winter Weather Keep You From Breaking A Sweat

While hibernating by a cozy fire is seemingly always tempting, for those of us who can’t stand being indoors for an extended period of time, we are lucky to live in a county full of glorious winter sports activities. Make sure to dress for the elements and bring plenty of water if you’re looking to get a workout from any of these. No worries about nominal snow—most of these activities will take place no matter what!

Yes, it’s true—snowshoeing is quickly becoming one of the most popular winter sports activities in the world! Lorain County Metro Parks (LCMP) generously offers guided snowshoe hikes and free snowshoe rental days at various locations. Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years and is now considered a winter sport—you can burn hundreds of calories in an hour and improve your cardio fitness level! For you first-timers, check out Snowshoe Magazine’s First-Timer’s Guide. Check the LCMP website for dates and times or go out on your own! Also, don’t miss the family-oriented Snowshoeing Games at Lakeview Park on January 22.

Icicles at Vermilion River Reservation

LCMP also offers guided hikes throughout the season. Learn about the habits of winter animals in the area or gaze at Mill Hollow’s larger than life icicles while you exercise. For a chance of scenery, hike at Common Ground – The Cindy Nord Center for Renewal. This gorgeous retreat is the ideal place to refresh your muscles surrounded by calming, beautiful forestry.

No need to travel to Colorado to ski, get your cross-country skiing fix right here in Lorain County! North Coast Inland Trail, known as the skinniest park of the LCMP, is perfect for cross-country skiers with its long straight-aways from Elyria to Kipton. The Bridgeway Trail, another LCMP site starts at Day's Dam in Lorain and ends at the High Meadows picnic area in Elyria. The expansive 4-1/2 mile trail passes through meadows and forest groves, under bridges and over the treetops on a 1000-foot bridge that crosses the river in two places.

Findley State Park offers snowshoeing and skiing, as well, but adds ice skating, ice fishing and sledding hills to their repertoire. Findley’s Annual Winter Hike (February 5) is a favorite among locals.

Speaking of sledding…rumor has it, Lorain County is home to some of the best hills around! Sledding is a great adrenaline rush for kids and adults. Famous sledding hills in the area include Vermilion River Reservation, Carlisle Reservation, Cascade Park in Elyria, behind Philips Gym in Oberlin, South Central Park in North Ridgeville or behind Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst. Do you have the perfect hill you visit each year? Comment below and let us know!

Want the winter recreation without the frozen toes and long-underwear layers? Indoor ice skating at North Park Complex Ice Arena may be your best bet. Don’t hesitate if you’re a new ice skater—there are plenty of instructional classes offered and Open Skate opportunities to practice. If summer can’t come soon enough, indoor kayak lessons at Splash Zone in Oberlin are sure to get your fix.

Ever wonder what the interesting round building behind the Oberlin McDonalds is? This is your chance to have a peek inside! The City of Oberlin’s Underground Railroad Center Implementation Team will be hosting a community update on Saturday, September 11th at 11am at the site of the Gasholder Building (the roundhouse structure, directly behind McDonalds), South Main Street in Oberlin.

Join the Implementation Team for an update on the not-too-distant future of the Oberlin Underground Railroad Center and park-and-ride project. there will be a short program comprised of a brief history of the efforts to establish this historic center, a local musical arrangement, an appreciation presentation, coupled with conceptual drawings and a limited tour of this unique architectural structure.

There is still plenty of time for summer swimming fun, and with the warmest water of any Great Lake, Lake Erie is an ideal beach location. Nestled in the north central shoreline of Ohio, Lorain County is home to some of the best beaches on Lake Erie. Whether you are interested in swimming, a family picnic, or simply sightseeing, Lorain County’s shoreline has it all. From Vermilion’s Main Street Beach in the The Harbour Town 1837 Historic District, to Veterans Memorial Park in Avon Lake, there is something for everyone. With so much to do, what are you waiting for?

Main Street Beach, located in the quaint historic downtown of Vermilion allows visitors to take advantage of the fantastic sunsets and lake views with their large observation deck located on the beach. The Vermilion Lighthouse and Inland Seas Maritime Museum provide an entire fun-filled day.

Lakeview Park stands as one of Lorain County’s most dynamic parks. With a beautiful stretch of sandy beach to go along with many amenities such as gazebos, picnic shelters, a playground, and a Bathhouse home to the popular Rose Café, this park is ideal for everyone. These 20 acres of lakeside land are also home to exciting recreation such as sand volleyball and lawn bowling. Stop by for spectacular sunsets and views of the Lorain Lighthouse or a look at the Historical Rose Garden, a landmark in Lorain County. Spend the night in Lorain and experience even more excitement. Grab dinner after a day at the beach at Jackalope Lakeside Bar and Rotisserie and depart from there on a Sunset Cruise. The opportunities are endless!

Century Park, located in Lorain is another great beach destination. Equipped with a snack bar, restrooms, showers, picnic shelters, grills, a playground as well as fishing access, you can’t go wrong!

Miller Road Park is yet another great location on Lake Erie’s Shore. This park’s 14 acres of land include a boat launch, fishing pier, gazebo, picnic pavilion, playground, restrooms, beachfront access to the lake including a handicap accessible ramp, and a ¼ mile walking path. During the summer it is also home to a summer concert series that is great for all ages. Spend the entire day and tour the historic Peter Miller House Museum located on the park premises.

The Sheffield Lake Community Park and Boat Launch is one of Lorain County’s most exciting new additions. Thanks to recent renovations, a new handicap accessible fishing pier and a free two lane boat launch are available for everyone to enjoy. Complete with ample parking, a beautiful sandy beach, and tables and chairs close by; this is a park you can’t miss!

Veterans Memorial Park is not only a beautiful beach, but it is also full of entertainment and history. With its lifeguard-staffed beach, this is an ideal swimming location. Also notable are its Veterans memorial, Lake House, historic Folger Home, and the Avon Lake Boat Club.

For those water enthusiasts who would prefer an indoor location, Splash Zone is perfect for you. This water park is complete with an indoor 8 lane pool, a tot lagoon, a 6,000 square foot outdoor pool with daring waterslides, outdoor concession stand, playground, fitness center, aerobic center, party room, and a field house with a three lane rubberized walking track and four volleyball/basketball courts. No matter the weather or time of year, Splash Zone is one of Lorain County’s most exciting and fun-filled adventure locations.

A Summer of History in Lorain County

From historical landmarks, to art; Lorain County, OH is the heart of many significant historical movements and events, as well as home to many important historical figures. The Lorain County Historical Society and Museum, the Spirit of '76 Museum, and the North Ridgeville Historical Society and Museum are just three of the many historical landmarks Lorain County has to offer. Spend some time this summer exploring north central Ohio’s historical roots. Who says learning has to stop during the summer?

The Lorain Historical Society, itself, has an appealing history that dates back to over 120 years, when it was established in 1888. In 1975 the Lorain Historical Society purchased a former mansion known as the Hickories in Elyria, OH to use as the headquarters for the museum and historical society, where it remains today.

This home once belonged to Arthur L. Garford, local inventor, industrialist, politician, and philanthropist. Visitors can tour the museum Tuesday through Friday, 1–4pm and Saturday, 1–3pm. The Lorain Historical Society provides information on Garford’s past and influence upon Lorain County, as well as various educational programs and art displays that relate to the overall history of Lorain County.

The Spirit of ’76 Museum in Wellington, OH serves as an important historical tribute to Archibald Willard and his painting “Yankee Doodle”, now known as “The Spirit of ‘76”. The museum includes over 4,000 artifacts from the surrounding time period including Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts. The museum is open April 1–October 31, Saturday and Sunday, 1–3:30pm. Visitors will learn the history behind the local artist and how his painting has transformed into American and Revolutionary iconography and regarded as the nation’s most inspirational painting of all time.

Another facet of Lorain County’s history can be found in North Ridgeville, OH. Visitors can experience local history by touring the historical society’s museum, located on the first floor of the Olde Towne Hall.

The extensive collection of artifacts and mementos including farming/agricultural items, military items, antique furniture, historical papers, photographs, etc. were gathered over the years from area residents. The museum is open on the last Sunday of every month (except December) from 2–5pm. Also available for touring is the historic Jaycox School, a one-room school house on Jaycox Rd., also open on the last Sunday of every month (April–October) from 2–5pm. The North Ridgeville Historical Society is currently celebrating their bicentennial anniversary with special programs and events through October 2010. 2010 Juneteenth Festival in Oberlin

Oberlin’s Juneteenth Festivities are almost upon us!

Though the holiday has since come to broadly commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, June 19th, 1865 actually corresponds to the announcement of the end of slavery in the state of Texas. Slavery was of course formally abolished with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but it took General Gordon Granger and a large contingent of Union soldiers entering Galveston to successfully deliver the message. From the balcony of a downtown villa, General Granger read the following proclamation:

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involved an absolute equality ot personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages.

The Juneteenth Celebration, an official Texas holiday since 1980, has since spread to other states. The growing popularity of this day of remembrance and respect signals, perhaps, a heightened sensitivity in America to the facts of our history; it's no surprise that Oberlin is at the forefront of such a movement. In 2004 the Oberlin City Council passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as an officially recognized day of commemoration and celebration. The town’s festivities are particularly interesting as the town adds it’s own rich history of abolitionist activism to the celebration.

This year Oberlin's Juneteenth takes as its theme, 1860: Oberlin on the Eve of the War. Educational presentations and historical reenactments will focus on how little, unassuming Oberlin, in its unfailing commitment to abolition, contributed immeasurably to the advent of war.

Throughout the antebellum period Oberlin was a final stop on the underground railroad. Community members, faculty, and students would routinely aid runaway slaves on their road to freedom. Earning a nationwide reputation, the small Ohio town was just as reviled by Southern slave owners as it was lauded by northern abolitionists.

Oberlin was also home to runaway slaves who had chosen to remain in the United States instead of continuing to Canada. Their first hand knowledge of slavery and ability to inspire the community to action proved indispensable to the movement. Westwood Cemetery is the final resting place of such liberal lights as Lewis Clarke (the basis for the character George Harris in Harriet Beecher Stowe's seminal novel Uncle Tom's Cabin), Henry Lee (runaway slave, Oberlin graduate and legal activist), John Scott (emancipated slave and participant in the rescue of runaway slave John Price), and Mary Kellogg (emancipated slave and ardent activist). The great African-American activists Wilson Bruce and Henry Evans are also buried at Westwood.

Also laid to rest at Westwood is Lee Howard Dobbins, a four year old fugitive slave whose harrowing story will be featured at this year's festival. Lee Howard reached Oberlin on the underground railroad in 1953 with an adoptive mother, but was too sick to travel any farther. Leaving Lee Howard in the care of an Oberlin family, his adoptive mother fled with several other children to escape their white pursuer, Lee Howard's plantation-owning father. The child died of consumption several days later. Over 1000 people attended his funeral in First Church. But it was more than just a memorial service; the event was a rallying moment for Oberlin's anti-slavery moment. By contributing ten cents apiece, the town purchased a headstone. Rev. Thome instructed the congregation to

Let that grave be a sacred spot. Plant there the flower to be watered by the tears of the future visitor. Erect a monument to the memory of the little slave boy, bearing the inscription 'Resurgam' and believe that as certainly as this little on shall rise again, so surely is written on the institution of slavery, 'it shall fall.'

Summer has finally hit Lorain County! For many among us that means funnel cakes and ferris wheels. And make no mistake, there'll be plenty of those. But the county is also known for its more unique festivals and bazaars! Take a look at what's happening in June alone:

June 3rd, Grand Pacific Junction First Thursday: Grand Pacific Junction is a wonderfully unique shopping area in Olmsted Falls, and what better time to take advantage of special sales and discounts than at the First Thursday festival. Also for your enjoyment: performances by local musicians and performers, food and refreshments, local crafters and vendors. This event is free. 440.235.1441.

June 5th, Balloon Fest 2010: For the third year running, Wellington has decided to kick off the summer with a truly amazing hot air balloon display. Sponsored by the Lorain County on Aging and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, this event allows you to closely inspect the balloons before the evening's take-off. Additionally, the festival will feature live entertainment, kids' games, a variety of food and beverage, local crafts and vendors, and exhibits and demonstrations of many kinds. Just $5 per car.

June 5th - 6th, Columbia Antique Gas Engine Show and Flea Market: If you've a knack for history and/or mechanics, this festival is a wonderful way to learn and have some fun at the same time. June 5th, Make-A-Splash Beach Party: One might say that the Make-A-Splash Beach Party at Lakeview Park is Lorain County's official summer kick-off. Activities will include a demonstration by the totally amazing Holy Trinity Unicycle Club, story time in the Rose Cafe, crafts, games, face painting, and much more. June 17th, Third Thursday in Vermilion - Music, Flowers, and a Sunset: Every third Thursday of the summer months, downtown Vermilion's historic Harbourtown is flooded with awesome live music. Residents and out-of-towners alike come downtown to browse the unique shops and enjoy the vibrant lakeside atmosphere.

June 18th - 19th, Juneteenth in Oberlin: Celebrate a day commemorating the end of slavery by visiting Oberlin, a town with a large historical role in abolition and the Civil War. The theme of this year's Juneteenth celebration is "1860: Oberlin on the Eve of War." Festivities begin on Friday with a trolley tour around Oberlin and ends on Saturday with a concert by "La Bamba" in Tappan Square. Other attractions include a parade, various vendors, give-a-ways, demonstrations, reenactments and performances.

June 18th - 19th, Juneteenth Celebration in Lorain: The city of Lorain is hosting their own Juneteenth Celebration Weekend at Harrison Cultural Community Centre. Friday night's feature is Gospel Night featuring numerous talented singers and praise dancers. The parade sets out on Saturday at 11:30 am. Stop by on either day for fun games, unique vendors, and delicious food.

June 18th - 20th, Festival of the Fish: 2010 marks the 44th year of this terrific lakeside Festival. For one weekend every summer Vermilion's Victory Park is filled with games, food, and vendors. The festival's main events include a lighted boat parade, a sand castle building contest, crazy craft races, and a queen's pageant. Admission to this weekend of beachy fun is free. 440.967-4477.

June 18th - 20th, Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival: One of Lorain County's more quirky festivals (one of it's more bizarre bazaars...?), the Duct Tape Festival is trippin' back to the 60s this year with the theme, "Peace, Love, & Duct Tape." June 25th - 26th, Ohio Scottish Games: Each summer, Lorain County hosts the state's premier (only?) Scottish games. The festivities begin on Friday night with a BBQ dinner and authentic highland music. But for the athletes, the camaraderie is short-lived; on Saturday the games begin. 440.835.9794.

June 25th - 27th, Lorain International Festival and Bazaar: One of the county's biggest summer events, the Lorain International Festival & Bazaar is a wildly fun weekend meant to commemorate and celebrate the city's diverse ethnic heritage. This year, the spotlight is on Lorain's vibrant Hungarian community. Black River Landing will be bursting with over 40 ethnic food vendors, myriad cultural arts & crafts, and exciting entertainment. June 25 - 27th, Columbia Homecoming Festival: Join Columbia Township in celebrating their town's history and heritage. Looking for some sports action this summer? Lorain County has a large number of exciting sports venues and events perfect for spectators and athletes alike.

Baseball: No offense to a certain professional baseball club just east of Lorain County, but there's no telling what the summer will be like as far as Major League Baseball is concerned. Luckily, there are other options:

Lake Erie Crushers: In their first year as the Frontier League's newest expansion team, the Lake Erie Crushers beat out twelve teams from all around the Midwest to win the League's championship. All signs point to an equally successful second season. The Crushers play at the new All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon. Opening night is May 21! Click here for a complete schedule.

Lorain County Ironmen: The Lorain County Ironmen compete in the Prospect League, a Midwest summer league for the region's top collegiate players looking to gain experience and simulate professional baseball life. The Ironmen play at the Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain. Click here for a complete schedule. Named after U.S. Steel, the Pipe Yard also hosts other local and regional ball teams throughout the season, including Oberlin College and local high school teams.

Triathlons: Thanks to Lake Erie and its beautiful beaches, Lorain County is an ideal location for summer triathlons.

Back Roads and Beaches Multi-Sport Route: If you're training for one of these triathlons, or just enjoy challenging and picturesque bikes rides through the countryside, we encourage you to utilize the award-winning Back Roads and Beaches Multi-Sport Route. The route features scenic, low-traffic roads and bike paths that lead riders through some of Ohio's best landscape, while also highlighting some of the area's most relevant history, culture and arts and cutting edge environmental initiatives. Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail: Beginning along the shale cliffs of the Vermilion River in Brownhelm Township, the 27-mile paddle trail winds down the river before entering Lake Erie in Vermilion. Once in open water, the trail heads east and follows the shoreline to Lorain where it enters the Black River. Heading upstream, paddlers will pass the U.S. Steel Mill before the trail ends at the Bur Oak Area of the Black River Reservation. Different segments of the water trail cater to different experience levels. Click here for a map.

Lakeview Park: Comprised of 20 acres of gorgeous, beachfront property, Lakeview Park is one of the city's most well-known summer recreation areas. The park has ample accommodations for volleyball, lawn bowling, and of course, swimming. Visitors often remark on the Historic Rose Garden and the view of the Lorain Lighthouse. In addition to triathlons, Lakeview also hosts the East/West Volleyball Open, July 24-25th.

Findley State Park: This popular state park is located in southern Lorain County south of the historic Village of Wellington on State Route 58. Over 900 acres of woodland are available year round for hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, kayaking, paddleboating, and camping enjoyment. In addition, Findley is equipped for disc golf and volleyball. On June 19th, bring the kids on out for the park's Youth Fishing Derby.

Oberlin College: Nearby Oberlin College boasts an impressive array of athletic facilities, including the Phillips Recreation Center. Phillips and the surrounding grounds accommodate athletes interested in tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, and swimming. Oberlin Splash Zone: Splash Zone, Oberlin's aquatic complex, consists of an 8-lane indoor pool, a tot lagoon, a large outside pool with two 24 ft. water slides and other water toys, a playground, a fitness room, an aerobics room and a party space. As of fall 2009, Splash Zone introduces its new field house, containing four basketball/volleyball courts and a three-lane walking track.

Golf: The county features several quality courses including:

Bob-O-Link Golf Course: 36 relatively flat and well-kept holes in Avon.
Columbia Hills Country Club: A private country club with 18 challenging holes.
Forest Hills Golf Course: An intermediate course in Elyria maintained by the Metro-Parks, featuring the "most difficult hole in Lorain County, number 7." Set up a tee time online here.

Lorain Sports Hall of Fame: Interested in the history of sports in Lorain? The Lorain Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation and display of Lorain'f rich sporting history. Check out the website for details and hours.

Get Active: Winter in Lorain County

We’re all resolving to be more active in 2010, so why not have fun while getting fit? Here are a few winter activities in Lorain County, North Central Ohio to help you get out and get moving.

Sledding: not just for kids. You’d be surprised how many calories you burn sled riding! After polling the locals, we’ve determined these are some of the best Lorain County sledding hills: Vermilion River Reservation, Carlisle Reservation in LaGrange, Cascade Park in Elyria, behind Philips Gym in Oberlin, behind Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst and South Central Park in North Ridgeville. Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing is another rewarding activity. Fresh air, beautiful scenery and toned legs, what more could you ask for? Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing is allowed in all Lorain County Metro Parks, even at Forest Hills Golf Club (when snow exceeds a 3” depth.)

The LCMP offers snow-shoe hikes throughout the winter season (they even provide the snow-shoes, so there’s no excuse!) Findley State Park in Wellington is another favorite winter locale for cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. Findley may not provide the snow-shoes or skis, but it’s well worth the investment to experience this park in the wintertime. Try Molnar Outdoor in Elyria to purchase snow-shoes; they carry a selection of Redfeather, a nice, lightweight version.

Both Findley State Park and the Lorain County Metro Parks offer a variety of winter hiking programs for adults and children. How about a Winter Tree I.D. Hike, Mid-Winter’s Eve Hike, or a Hot Chocolate Hike? Here’s a list of the Metro Park’s upcoming programs. The 30th Annual Winter Hike at Findley is Feb. 6th at 10 am; includes 10k, 5k and interpretive lead hikes. According to the folks at Findley, the best part of the hike is the bean soup afterwards!

Of course, there are plenty of indoor activities in Lorain County to get your blood flowing. Show off your figure 8s while ice skating at North Park Complex Ice Arena in Elyria or give the Wii a rest and experience real bowling at Rebman Recreation; they have electronic scoring (no thinking necessary) and bumper rails for the kiddies.

Splash Zone in Oberlin added to their already impressive facility, another pool and a Field House with a three-lane rubberized walking track and four volleyball/basketball courts. Sign up for league play or any of Splash Zone’s land and water fitness classes.

If you’re looking for a good Lakeside dining option try the Rose Cafe at Lakeview Park. The Rose Cafe has gorgeous views of the Lorain Lighthouse and Lake Erie. Brunch is a wonderful holiday time treat! Another popular Lakeside dining experience is the Jackalope Restaurant. Situated on the shores of Lake Erie, it offers wonderful views of the marina and the historic Lorain Lighthouse.

Check out all the spooky-scary tricks and family-fun treats happening in Lorain County this October!

As the temperature drops and the leaves begin to turn, the ghouls and goblins of Lorain County come out to play. For all you thrill seekers out there, here’s where to go to find them:

Terror in the Field: Vermilion’s Old Haunted State Street School presents a 1/3 mile corn maze at Novotney's Farm Market, across from Friendship Gas Station in Vermilion, and all too close to Lake Eeeeerie. October 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, and 31st.
Halloween Fair: From 5–7 this autumn fair at the Carlisle Reservation Visitor’s Center is family friendly; the bewitching hour begins at 7. The fair includes a spooky trail (see pic below) music, games, and food. October 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th, and 31st.

North Ridgeville’s Spookville: From 4 to dusk it’s all fun and games in Spookville, with face painting, crafts, applesauce making, and pumpkin carving. But after dusk the 1/4 mile Haunted Trail opens and the terror begins. Located in South Central Park, October 17th.
Ghost Watch at the Moore House: The Moore House, location of the Black River Historical Society, invites unbelievers to view a REAL ghost hunt conducted by a team of experts from the Ohio Researchers of Banded Spirits (don’t believe this exists, do you? Check out their website. Crazy!). Adults only, $25 Limited tickets. During the ghost hunt, cemetery tours, food, and a bonfire will be available outside for Halloween lovers of all ages. October 24th.

If blood-curdling, teeth-chattering terror isn’t your style, there are still plenty of other ways to enjoy the season in Lorain County. For instance, check out:

Pumpkin Land: While you stock up on cider and apples at Miller’s Orchard, let your kids roam this fun, autumnal play area. Two hay mazes, one well-lit and one dark, scarecrows, farm animals and plenty of pumpkins. Open through Halloween.

Halloween Campout: Findley State Park is getting in the holiday spirit with this festive campout festival. For only the regular camping fees, campers of all ages can enjoy movies, games, a costume pet parade, trick-or-treating, hay rides, a scarecrow contest and delicious pot-luck soup. October 9th and 10th.
Fall Hay Wagon Rides and Corn Maze: Come to the Carlisle Reservation Equestrian Center for the quintessential fall experience. Traditional, horse-drawn hay rides leave every 15 minutes until 3:30 PM. The Corn Maze measures a whopping 4 acres. October 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th, 24th, and 25th.
North Ridgeville Tot-Trick-or-Treat: Bring the kids to North Ridgeville’s City Hall for a night of safe trick-or-treating. Lots of candy to be had. October 30th.
Halloween at Jamie's Flea Market: Start your Halloween day off right with a trip to Jamie's Flea Market. Trick-or-treating for kids 12 and under and scavenger hunts for a chance to win Jamie’s Gift Certificates.

And finally, let these special events attest to the fact that Halloween isn’t just for the younger kids:

Monster Mash Bone Bash: The costume party of the year, at Matus Winery in Wakeman. Dress to impress. Previous award winners have included pirates, hippies, and ghosts--but you can top that. October 31st.

A Perfect Fall Weekend in Wellington, OH

The Village of Wellington, located in the southern portion of Lorain County, OH, is a quaint, small town with lots of spirit. In addition to being known as the Cheese Capital of the World from around 1868 until about 1910, it is also know for its stunning collection of 19th & early 20th century architecture. And of course, for being the home of artist Archibald Williard, while he painted the famed Spirit of '76.

Lake Erie Sport Fishing in Lorain County

Here's what OSU Extension Specialist Dave Kelch from the Ohio Sea Grant has to say about Lorain County's waters:

From spectacular walleye fishing on Lake Erie, to fishing the numerous tributary streams for trophy steelhead, make Lorain County your angling destination—spring, summer, fall and winter.

Walleye are considered the most-pursued game fish on Lake Erie, and in Lorain County waters, they are caught along Lorain County’s rocky nearshore beginning in the spring and continuing through the entire season. Deeper offshore water offers anglers plenty of walleye action during the summer and fall months, with both trolling and drifting cast methods being productive. Limit catches and trophy sized fish are trademarks of our Lake Erie waters.

The well known sandbar, located between Lorain and Vermilion, creates a natural habitat for summer and fall walleye, producing many trophy-size “hawg” walleye in late October and November. Smallmouth bass are plentiful along the entire length of Lorain County’s rocky shoreline and artificial reef structures, providing fast action from spring through fall. Numerous bass fishing tournaments originate from Lorain Harbor due to both the abundance and size of Lorain County smallmouth.

Don’t overlook Lorain’s popular artificial reefs (the largest in Lake Erie) which are a natural haven for the smallmouth. In addition, walleye and yellow perch are also frequent visitors to these mounds of rock and concrete rubble. Steelhead trout anglers will find Lorain County to be the place to stay and fish. Stocked annually in local tributary streams, steelhead seek out the colder, deeper waters offshore of Lorain County in the summer months, where they feed heavily on Lake Erie’s abundant forage supply and grow larger. Many offshore anglers target steelhead during late June-August, frequently taking limit catches, along with many trophy-sized walleye!

From mid-October through early May, steelhead will enter Lorain County and other nearby tributaries in preparation for their annual spawning rituals, providing a great opportunity to catch trophy-size fish. Plan on staying two or three days, fishing different locations within a 20 minute dreive east and west of Lorain County, or right in Lorain County itself! Fly-fishing with artificials and spinning tackle with live bait, spawn sacs, and spinners are all productive. Plenty of local tackle shops can provide the anglers with all the supplies they need, along with up-to-date fishing reports.

Lake Erie yellow perch, often referred to as “the gold of the lake,” provide superb angling opportunities from spring through fall. Beginning in September, schooling perch again move shoreward, only this time for their pre-winter feeding spree. Limit catches with plenty of “jumbo perch” are generally the rule in Lorain County waters during spring and fall, yet limit catches are very common throughout the summer in deeper waters. Ohio’s Division of Wildlife indicates plenty of “jumbos” for the 2003 catch, ranging from 11” to 13”, will keep anglers busy and fill coolers, along with trophy sized 14” plus perch from the 2001 hatch.

What's in Season at Lorain County Farmer's Markets

Lorain County has a farmer's market/produce stand on every corner throughout the county!!! OK, that could be a bit of an exaggeration, but not too far from the truth. We're known for our agriculture, so it's safe to say we have A LOT of farmer's markets in Lorain County, Ohio. From the rural, southern farms, all the way up to Lake Erie, you'll find a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce. Here's a sampling of north central Ohio markets you don't want to miss and what is currently in season:

Grobe Fruit Farm (43875 Telegraph Rd., Elyria, OH, 440.322.8312) says now is the time for sweet corn, potatoes, squash, green beans, apple cider, tomatoes in a week, peaches and berries at the end of July.

Spiegelberg Orchards (6161 Middle Ridge Rd., Amherst, OH, 44.233.6083) currently has sour & sweet cherries and starting July 17th they'll have pitted tart cherries and starting July 20th, Lodi Apples.

One of Lake Erie's Best Beaches

Lakeview Beach in Lorain, Ohio is one of the best beaches in Lorain County, and I will venture to say, one of the best on Lake Erie!

Thanks to the Lorain County Metro Parks, all of the necessary amenities are present: lifeguards, changing rooms, and a snack bar. But what makes it extraordinary are all of the other amenities like a new bathhouse

and restaurant with outdoor seating, an historic rose garden in full bloom,

a beautiful view of the Lorain Lighthouse, a lighted fountain, a picnic gazebo, a designated lawn bowling area, a playground, and most importantly...a clean beach with friendly people. What a wonderful way to spend a summer day!

June marks the beginning of Festival Season in North Central Ohio. There is no doubt that we like to celebrate in Lorain County. You name it, we have a festival for it: hot air balloons, fairies, fish, duct tape, chalk, and that's only during the month of June! Our festivals keep going all summer long: cheese, corn, quilts, woolybears...

Spring art exhibit inspired by poetry of Pablo Neruda

A great new, spring exhibit opened at the Stocker Arts Gallery at Lorain County Community College in Elyria and Visit Lorain County had the pleasure to attend the opening, eat great Mexican Food, watch the Sacred Heart Liturgical Dancers and hear some of the artists and creators of the exhibit speak.

Suenos y Esperanza: Hopes and Dreams
Thursday, April 23– Sunday, May 3, 2009

A special gallery exhibition featuring “I’ll Sing in Silence,” a portfolio of serigraph prints by Jose R. Alicea, inspired by the poetry and prose of Pablo Neruda. Also featured are Prayer sticks and Sculpture by Mario Kujawski, including an outdoor environmental sculpture created by the artist and LCCC art students. This exhibit will also include art, poetry, and an oral history collection by LCCC students, as well as illustrations and poetry by students from Longfellow Middle School, Lorain. These illustrations have been included in a children’s book authored by Dr. Raquel Ortiz, which will be featured in the exhibition.

Postlude and Pilgrimage

Sunday, May 3 from 2 – 5pm
Featuring the Sacred Heart Chapel 12:00 Mass Choir, performing at 3pm, and a Pilgrimage walk to the Suenos y Esperanza environmental sculpture at 4pm.

It is a fact that recreational vehicle rentals are up, way up this season, at least in Lorain County. According to Neff Brothers RV Rental, "This is the first-ever Thanksgiving holiday that we are just about booked out for the long weekend. In the past handful of years we were lucky to put three or four rentals out for the holiday and as of today, I have a dozen hitting the road by Wednesday. What’s the difference: airlines are not so much the friendly skies these days, gas prices dipped and families are pulling their resources to travel together to destinations and are saving money by taking an RV." How refreshing to hear that people are still traveling despite the woes of the economy. Thanks for the great news Neff Brothers RV!
